i love this book! while this book might not be for everyone, it is exactly right for me and everyone i happen to know. highly recommended. it's definitely on the mtv/vh1 side of the fence so that may be why some parents might feel alienated by the format, tone, and breadth of voice-bubble notated opinions. as a bookworm by nature i love books and love reading, but i found the two other books i bought first put me to sleep almost immediately (and then woke with the nightmares they induce). this book, however, is one i just can't put down. i got it for christmas and i've only got a chapter to go. born in the 70s and expecting? buy this book. expectant mothers AND fathers will like this book. doesn't treat partners like theyre dumbasses or like they're instinctively going to treat parental responsibility like a smelly hot potato to be tossed back to the one with ovaries as quickly as possible. for dads who want to be good dads.
Just like the title says... straight from the hips! I LOVE this book because it tells it how it really is. Lots of quotes and short stories of real women with real life experiences. I rented this book from the library and I wasn't quite done with it before it was due back so I purchased it off of Amazon. This will make a good read for anyone who is preparing for childbirth! I intend to share this with the next lucky lady who becomes pregnant.
Comprehensive and informative This book reads really well and has a TON of information in it, don't expect to read it in one day! It contains a lot of different subjects, and I found that the book grew with me. At first I found the parts on pregnancy enjoyable but wasn't too interested in the last half of the book about your body after birth, taking care and adjusting to having a newborn. Now that I'm in my third trimester it's a lot more interesting for me and I've almost read this book cover to cover. And yes, not everything in this book is pretty, but if you think pregnancy is all happy times then you'll likely be disappointed in coming months.
Horrificaly Negative Pregnancy Book If you want to hear every negative person's experience during pregnancy, and be bombarded by drawings of fat and unhappy looking women this is for you. This was given to me by a friend, and I have to say, it is the most mean-spirited gift I have received. The quotes seem like an anonymous mask for every angry woman's beef with pregnancy. The sections have a dreadful focus on what can go wrong. And the large chart of the fat woman with arrows pointing to every area of her body with descriptions of what could go wrong was just appalling. Regardless of how much pink one can use, nothing could mask this horrendously negative "modern" approach to pregnancy.
The ultimate "get real" guide! I have no shortage of pregnancy books (my husband started my library by ordering the Mayo Clinic guide), but this is the only one that was compelling enough to read cover to cover! What I like most about it is the non-judgmental, thoroughly researched, yet chatty and "get real" tone.
The guiding principle here seems to be, "there is no right way." There's what's right for YOU and YOUR BABY.
I could have spent months ordering books by the various gurus of pregnancy and parenting (yes, they cover the post-pregnancy stuff too!), to contrast and compare the endless studies and opinions, but the authors have done my work for me. Consider this the buyer's guide to the barrage of information. They've heard it all, tried a lot of it, and the myriad anecdotes from "anonymoms" (and daddys too) fill in any gaps.
Extensive references let you know where to find in-depth information on any particular subject. "From the Hips" will tell both sides of the story, but they can't go totally into depth - once you decide what's appealing, you can find out more.
Just as valuable is the perspective it provides on being pregnant/parent. The positive and the negative get equal face-time. Chances are, you'll find some sentiments or stories that echo yours, and get some validation. You are not the first person to feel this way, but it can seem that way sometimes.
I am 7 months in, and I feel a lot more secure about what's ahead, because I know what I'm in for, and I know where to look when the problems come!
